Genetic resources are the basis of genetic improvement, since in them is contained the genetic variability. Nowadays, with the incorporation of biotechnology, the conservation and rational utilization of phylogenetic resources makes this area an important link between nature, science and the producer.
To traditional crops of Chile, new cultivable species are being incorporated; native and autochthonous plants are being rescued for its conservation as patrimony of the country, and genetic resources with food and industrial potential are being identified in such a way as to strengthen the identity of the genetic resources themselves.
INIA is working on the rescue and conservation of the vegetable genetic patrimony, animal, and of microorganisms of the country.
