Fruit Research

Based on quality scientific research, INIA´s National Fruit Program aims to generate and transfer knowledge and technologies that contribute to the increase of the national fruticulture´s competitiveness and sustainability. To achieve this, the work is focused on the development of new varieties through genetic improvement, obtaining fruits that preserve their quality for long periods post-harvest. On the other hand, it also develops and evaluates agronomic techniques that help to maintain the productive sustainability of fruit orchards according to the different agro-ecological conditions of the productive areas.

General Objective

  • On one hand, the work is focused on the development of new varieties through genetic improvement, thus obtaining fruits that preserve their quality for long periods post-harvest.
  • On the other hand, it develops and evaluates agronomic techniques that help to maintain the productive sustainability of fruit orchards according to the different agro-ecological conditions of the productive areas.

Lines of Research and Development

The National Fruit Program´s lines of research fit within corporate strategic objectives.

  • Genetic and biotechnology improvements.
  • Physiology and post-harvest technology.
  • Sustainable agricultural management of fruit orchards.
  • Propagation of reproductive materials free of diseases.
  • Technology Packages for new varieties of major and minor fruits.
  • Integrated management of pests and diseases with reduced use of agrochemicals, which translates into a key element of differentiation in the domestic and international markets.
